Well Woman
Advice regarding:
• Contraception (annual check for patients who take the contraceptive
pill. Six months’ prescription issued between checks)
• Menopause
• Pre-menstrual problems
• Breast awareness (not examination)
• Pre-conceptual advice
• Cervical smears
A cervical smear test detects any pre-cancerous changes in the neck of the
womb and could help save your life. If you are aged between 20 and 64 years
we advise that you be checked. Patients are recalled routinely every four
years.
Asthma
• Peak flow monitoring
• Inhaler technique discussed
• Medication review
Diabetes
• Annual checks, including dietician and podiatry review
• Blood sugar checks and urine tests
• Medication review
Travel
• We stock most routine vaccines required for foreign travel
• It is necessary to make an appointment at least six weeks prior to
travelling
• Information board available - advice not given over the telephone.
Health Checks
Appointments can be made for anyone between the ages of 16-74 who have not
seen a GP within a three year period or patients who are aged 75 and over who
have not seen a GP in the last year. General checks will be carried out as follows:
• Height, weight, urine
• Lifestyle advice
• Blood pressure
• Tetanus status
Hypertension
• Blood pressure checks
• General advice
Heart Disease (CHD)
• Annual review by invitation
• Medication update
• Appropriate blood tests arranged
• Mini health check
Smoking Cessation
• Appointments with the nurse available for patients who wish to stop
smoking.
• It is not necessary to see a doctor first.
Dressings And Minor Injuries
• Appointments made for any minor injuries or dressings.
• It is necessary to attend accident and emergency department of the
hospital if it is a possible fracture.
Minor Ailments
Appointments are available with the nurse for the following:
• Chesty coughs • Sore throats • Ear
ache
• Eye infections • Chest
infections • Urinary infections
Prescriptions will be issued by the nurse if it is appropriate. It is important
that patients see the nurse rather than the doctor for the above.

Booking Clinic - appointment with midwife when pregnancy has been confirmed.
Antenatal Clinic - to monitor health throughout pregnancy
- to monitor the development of your unborn baby.
Minor Surgery

Baby Clinic
These are used to check a baby’s progress and for immunisation purposes.
Appointments are made by the Child Health Department - Tel 01274 852337.
The health visitors hold a 'drop-in' baby clinic at St Andrew's Church, Old
Bank Road on a Wednesday morning between 10.00 and 11.30am.
Healthy Living Clinic
A nurse, employed by the Primary Care Trust, attends the surgery to hold clinics
looking at prevention of heart disease.
Appointment is by invitation.
Help Yourself To Health
Six ways you can help yourself to live a healthier lifestyle:
• Be a non-smoker
• Watch your weight
• Take regular exercise
• Eat a high fibre, low fat diet
• Only take alcohol in moderation
• Avoid excessive exposure to the sun
Non-NHS Services
Certain services such as private sick notes, insurance claim forms, travel
cancellations and some medical examinations are not covered by the NHS and charges
are made in line with the appropriate BMA recommended fee.
An appointment is not usually necessary, please check with the receptionists
who will also inform you of the charge, so that the account can be settled immediately.
